Oh how strong I have been.

Oh how strong I have been since our last depart.
Even with the very little news I get in a white envelope with my name on it
With your location no where to be seen.

Oh how strong I have been since the last time I heard your voice.
I hear it every night when I drift off into sleep.
It’s always the same dream, always the same memory,
The day I watched you walk up those steps and fly away.

Oh how strong I have been since the last time you held me.
Sleeping with pillows all around me,
Pretending it is you.
A smell lingers on the sheets, the smell of you.

Oh how strong I have been.
Not letting tears fall in front of others.
They say everything will be okay.
But will it? How do they know?

Oh how strong I have been since you left to fight.
Every time someone knocks on the door,
I brace my self for who might be there.
Bracing myself if I see another Marine at my door with a white envelope in his hand.
Bracing myself every time the phone rings.

Oh how strong I have been since the last time I saw you,
Knowing it could have been my last.
Going on in life like nothing has changed.
But everything has changed.
You're not here by my side.
You're not here to be a pillow
For my head.
Everything has changed.

Oh how weak I have been…
