Spent some time outside last night
To look up at the stars
The moon and planets shining bright
Saturn, Neptune, even Mars
I lay alone, breathing slow, to watch the twinkling light
Then all at once, a shot rang out, exploding through the night
Shocked and scared, my whipped round, searching for a killer
Or a robber
Or a drunkard from the bar
But all around, the night was empty
I had no company, ‘cept the stars
Then peering closer, all made sense
There was no need to run
It wasn’t a killer
Or a robber
But two stars that held the gun!
Those shooting stars fought all night long,
I couldn’t tell you why
And though I asked each star I knew
They were baffled, as was I
I don’t know why they fought
But I can say without a doubt
That when the dawn’s first light approached,
Both stars sputtered out
So bear in mind, when late at night
Your eyes turn to the sky
That heaven isn’t peaceful – I saw two stars die.
