It wasn’t romantic.

We were outside the mens restroom
it was dark,
and our friend was inside
but he asked me if I thought he was attractive.

It wasn’t romantic.

I did, I told him,
and he said he thought the same
he stepped towards me, and he asked,
have you had your first kiss?

It wasn’t romantic.

My heart sank and I sighed
as I said no.
I hated the question:
Fourteen and no kisses?

It wasn’t romantic.

He asked if I wanted to kiss him.
I nodded.
“You do?”
I nodded again.

It wasn’t romantic.

He leaned in and I think I did
although,
I can hardly remember,
because all I could see was his nose.

It wasn’t romantic.

Our noses bumped first
and our lips,
they came second,
His lips were so soft.

It wasn’t romantic.

Back away.
Giggle.
He’s only a friend.
He said right after he didn’t want to date.

It wasn’t romantic.

I told my friends.
They kind of laughed
and I kind of did too
because it was just so funny.

It wasn’t romantic.

He’s just a little taller
and a little thinner
and a little darker
and a little nicer.

It wasn’t romantic.

He’s funny and he likes my hair,
he’s smart and I love his hair,
he thinks I’m attractive
and I think he’s more than all that.

It wasn’t romantic.

I can hardly remember his lips
our touch was so fleeting
I want that moment back
I need that moment back.

It wasn’t romantic.

The mens restroom is calling me
and I want that moment back
Because he’s a year younger than me
and he’s kissed more girls
and I’ve never had a boyfriend.
But

It wasn’t romantic

So obviously there’s nothing left,
nothing in store for the two of us,
no boyfriend for me,
because,

It wasn’t romantic,

so I can’t be in love
no, I can’t
or at least,
That’s what I tell myself,
because

It wasn’t romantic.

My first kiss. Embarrassingly recent. Depressingly unimportant.
