what are you saying
I am saying, you
because there are words
sounds, unintelligible to me
coming from parted lips
yours, ruby red
eyes like my mother
on her death bed
smile like a stranger's
distant, you don't know me
from over there
on the other side of the earth
that's really only the other side
of the room
that's really only the seat
next to mine on the couch
all empty space and silence
the sound of popping balloons
has always frightened us
