A Face and not a Screen

A tear rolls down your cheek and on to your
Cell phone screen
A million words behind your eyes that you can’t type
And don’t want to have to mean
While your lips are sealed tight and your
Fingers fidget over the keys
I wish that you could hear me
Instead of only listening to what you read
I may not know what’s going on
I don’t know your secret login key
But you need to know that I am here
Someone beyond the technology
The sickly glow on your face
Reflecting from the phone that is hiding those
Cowards that are causing you pain
Highlights the need to speak
To a face and not through a screen
I wish that you could find your voice
Which I remember used to sound like a sweet melody
Now whenever you try to breathe a story
The only life that comes through is mechanically
Altered to sound robotic and feeling-less
And I hate to see
You looking so helplessly
At your contacts list trying to find
Somebody new to message while
I’ve been standing here in the flesh
No number needed
I may not know what’s going on
I don’t know your secret login key
But you need to know that I am here
Someone beyond the technology
The sickly glow on your face
Reflecting from the phone that is hiding those
Cowards that are causing you pain
Highlights the need to speak
To a face and not through a screen

The author's comments:
I actually wrote this as I was watching my friend texting a bunch of friends, and living in cyberspace, instead of focusing on where we were and what we could be doing together. I could tell she was happy texting one person and upset texting the next, and she wanted to tell me what was going on but could only seem to form the words with her keyboard and not her mouth. She inspired this piece for me.
