Dreams are true while they last, and do we not live in dreams?
~Alfred Lord Tennyson

Friends are islands
School is an ocean
Which those islands are connected to
But what happens to the one…
… The one who is friendless?
Is she doomed to a deserted island?
With nothing to do?
But wish to be saved?
Brought to another island?

She’s left
Feeling alone on her own
Lost, rejected, hopeless
Doomed forever to be…
…The odd one out
Left in tears
Left in loneliness
Because she drew the short straw
To be the odd one out
Shall be her curse for all of eternity?

Family is a war
Fighting for love and affection
For something meant to be unconditional
But what does that even mean?
When sides are chosen

And not your mother
Nor father, nor siblings
Are behind you
What do you do?

You’re left
Feeling alone on your own
Lost, rejected, hopeless
Doomed forever to be…
…The odd one out

Left in tears
Left in loneliness
Because you drew the short straw
To be the odd one out
Shall be your curse for all of eternity?

Is it your fault?
No!
Is life fair?
You tell me
Is it fair that people are homeless?
That the innocent die in war?
That children go hungry?
That homes are destroyed?

People are left
Feeling alone on their own
Lost, rejected, hopeless
Doomed forever to be…
…The odd ones out
Left in tears
Left in loneliness
Because they drew the short straw
To be the odd ones out
Shall be their curse for all of eternity?

Please,

Don’t say it to be so

The author's comments:
I started this poem because I felt alone and sad. Then it became a statement for anyone who has felt or feels like an odd one out. I know I do. I hope this will show people that there are so many problems in the world that need to be fixed. I also hope it will remind people that they're not alone.

P.S. ~ This is my first piece submitted.

This is amazing! I love how your poem has a chorus-type-thing, and the comparison at the beginning, with people as islands, was really thoughtful too. You're an AMAZING writer! :D
