I guess you've joined the ranks
of the few.
I've been in love hundreds of times
but the only ones I care about
are the ones that end up in ink.

the first is my father
for he gave me life.
we loved and we
lost and we played
with our strife.

the second was a boy
when I was only thirteen
ran my mind into a gutter
and my tears into a stream.

the third was my muse
as much as I was his
he writes songs with his guitar
and sings about loving again.

the fourth was my best friend
flanking my side and I could always depend
on him in the end.
but unrequited love never finishes
with panache. it ended solemnly
and my heart gone in a flash.

you're the fifth
and I guess you've done something new
you've made me realize
it's all about the who.
who you are, were, and will be
I'm really hoping I can see.

you took me by surprise with
those lapis lazuli eyes.
I guess you're a gem
in a sea of unpolished stones.
you're special now
and I understand why.
