Gustav Mahler: If a musician could say what he needed to say in words, he would not bother trying to say it in music.

You struggle everyday.

Middle school.
You're struggling to keep your grades in top nick,
Struggling to fit in with the social norm,

Struggling so much,
You feel like you're in a battlefield,
All the teachers against you.

Battlefield.
You're struggling to keep running, though you've been shot,
Struggling to take in each breath.

Struggling so much,
Your life flashes before your eyes,
And you remember how you thought middle school was bad.

One last, single laugh,
You've always been good-humored,
You struggle to get it out, but
It's hard with a bullet in your chest.

The author's comments:
This poem was inspired by the thought that even though our country is seriously messed up right now, there are still soldiers out there, fighting for it. It really tells you something, doesn't it? Each one of us has an instant loyalty to our country, and whether we see it or not, we love this place. I know I would give my life to protect it.
