A Lullaby
Do you know, my dear, of the songs of the night?
Of the tempting and wicked
darkness of fright?
Have you met, my love, the ingredients to life?
A pound of strength
and a dash of strife?
What do you believe, my heart, of the brightness of day?
Too short a time
or the reason we stray?
Have you heard, my sweet, of the height of the trees?
How they bend, and laugh,
and sway in the breeze?
What do you see, my child, of the safety of home?
Do you wish to curl up near it
or wish you could roam?
Do you embrace, my pet, the things of the Earth?
With arms open wide
to accept all these reasons of worth?
And one last question, my dear, before we head off to sleep.
Can you see all my love
or is it too deep?
