You only live once.

My past haunts me just like the monster it is
It tried to shoot my hope down, but apparently it missed
My past stalks me in the shadow of my mistakes
It’s hard to get rid of monsters that I create

I can’t run away because it’s following me everywhere I go
My past is catching up to me because my future’s too slow
I cannot fight it because it’s too strong
This monster wouldn’t be here if I knew right from wrong

Everybody sooner or later will meet this beast
This monster is not above, but beneath me
This monster is my past, so the apple can’t fall too far from the tree
It mimics me, copies my every move

But now it’s one step ahead of me, determined to make me lose
Life is too short and I can’t take this monster any longer
My future is my savior and my past is the monster

The author's comments:
I was inspired to write this poem because I thought of my life - then and now. I realized I've made some mistakes and that the path I'm on, I paved; only I can change it. I hope that readers realize that the monsters in their past do not have to define their future.
