Prayer for Peace

May 18, 2012

May we smile at each passing stranger,
may we look men in the eye,
may we let ourselves feel without boundaries,
when we finally escape.
May we learn to trust one another,
may we learn to love ourselves,
may we stop being afraid,
and live our lives in peace.

The author's comments:
This piece was created by six young women, plus myself. They are all prostitutes. The oldest is 32. The youngest is just 14. I recorded each of their responses to the question "What do you need for yourself, so that you can find peace once this chapter of your life is over?" This poem belongs to them, really. I just put it all together.
