i wished to fall

the way leaves do
in autumn
when the jarring trees
need them most

how cookie crumbs are
wiped from a sticky mouth
of pb&j
to the linoleum

like the baby bird
tumbled from her nest
as if it were the top bunk
at sleep away camp

but as much as i tried
the leaves were raked
the crumbs were swept
and the bird was rescued
