your back is a stage today (I dance).

Each small mountain

all in a row

on very tip-toes (no,

not the kind you can walk on

when those heels are too tall for you),

the ballet tip-toes. The tip of the tip as far as the tips of toes go.

fragile,

I climb them.

(but your spine)

Bending about the waist, turning

the air drawn deep within the crowd

they guard it there

safe (or so).

linger at the peak

spotlights are very bright in the heavens (I scream).

down.

Your back is a stage today (I dance).

The author's comments:
A friend was giving me a back scratch and she said whenever she scratched my back she would either be a dancer or an ice skater, on a stage or a rink. So one day she said "your back is a stage today" and thus was born the poem.
