"Thou! thy truest type of grief is the gently falling leaf."
-Edgar Allan Poe

A sub today and reminiscing
On all the days that we were missing.
Times before that now are lost
Except in a pile of memories tossed.
Years long gone are now dug up
And poured back in our minds, a cup.
We laugh, cajole, we trick and joke,
But inside are we not all broke?
The past and present we can’t unite
And towards the future we all must fight.
What do we have in those dark hours
When dreams alone hold all the powers?
Memories only stand by us in the end,
A loyal enemy and constant friend.

The author's comments:
I was in latin class today and we had a substitute teacher. My class, which can be quite unruly, was chatting about all the funny things that have happened in class since we first started taking latin in seventh grade. There is only one latin teacher in my school, so we have all been in the same class for almost five years and we're like one big family. I wrote this after I finished translating the paragraph that our teacher left for us.
