Every time I see you
Dream of you, hear your name
Stretched against the voice of some other
My insides twist and my throat takes a g
And my heart beats with sporadic palpitations, exasperation
Icy and feverish
I think I’m in love with you
Every time you say my name
Let the words drip thick and casual from your mouth
Followed by a winking lip
I suck in my breath and my blue eyes turn grey, and wide
My fingers curl and scurry across each of my palms
Nervous and quick
I think I’m in love with you
Every time your shoulder hits mine
A debut embrace, an inch of warm and beating flesh
I lean in for more, swallow in your youthful musk,
Fur pine bark, accented by a biting November’s damp soil
The whole innocence of it swirls perfectly with my own
A blushing dawn’s perfumed exhale
I think I’m in love with you
Every time I think of us
I jump ahead a few years, leap to a warm October morning
When the sky is rosy, lace-locked, and faded, reminiscent of a Victorian parlor
I in my buttermilk gown, you in your crisp blue tie
Me holding on to an iron-wrought gate, sliding my finger up a cold metal curl for good luck
Before I walk down a grassy plush aisle and the decayed sunlight turns your eyes grey
When I finally can say,
I love you
