Meeting Eyes with a Beautiful Stranger
I saw you smile from a distance,
and your teeth looked so pure
and flawless,
that I began to feel something akin
to jealousy.
Then, your perfectly combed
blonde hair,
and your perfect figure,
and your designer clothing
all seemed
to give you the appearance of
perfection.
But then,
I saw your eyes,
and I began
to second-guess
my initial
reaction.
The dullness in your eyes
reminded me of
a mirror
with no reflection,
or perhaps
the bottom of a polluted
lake.
And as we met eyes,
however briefly,
in that moment
I felt as if
you could see
that we
were not
the same.
And then you looked away,
but I kept following you
with my eyes
as you walked further and further
away.
And for some reason,
I didn’t realize
until quite some time
later
that I watched you
long after you had stopped
watching me,
even though
you were the one with
dull
eyes.
