District 25
Waking up with this feeling of uncertainty,
not knowing what to expect,
you know what you signed up for,
but you still dread what lies ahead.
You put on your uniform.
You think of friends that have fallen.
You leave.
You say "bye" to your wife and kids,
and hope that it will not be the last time.
You get to the office,
and get calls of robbery and murder.
You're out on patrol.
You get a call,
saying there is a shooting just blocks from where you are.
It is your job to go,
you get nervous,
on that drive,
millions of thoughts run through your mind.
You arrive on the scene,
you help.
You have to remain strong.
You cannot help but feel sad.
Day comes to an end,
a feeling of relief.
You’re a cop,
you see horrific things.
There is no better feeling than knowing that,
you made a difference.
