The Lamp
The lamp sits all alone in a dark empty living room.
There is no furniture,
no coffee table to hold it above the ground.
It sits there on the carpet,
plugged into a dull white wall smudged with dirt and grime.
There is no current thrumming behind it.
The electricity is gone.
And yet,
that makes no difference.
With or without it the room would stay dark.
Beneath its beaten lamp shade,
the white egg of the lamp’s bulb wears a small jagged crack.
The lamp is useless and that is why it was left behind.
