You Remember
You remember how he smiled when you first met
He asked for a mint and you gave him your last
And you said, It was supposed to be mine.
And when he stole your first kiss,
You said, It was supposed to be mine.
And when he took your heart in hand,
You said, It was supposed to be mine.
And when you saw them at the dance together
You said, He was supposed to be mine.
And when you saw them hand in hand at school
You said, That was supposed to be mine.
You remember how he said goodbye at graduation
He kissed you on the cheek for the first time
And you were going to do it first
And you said, That was supposed to be mine.
You remember how he laughed and told you
You were supposed to be mine.
And you didn’t know what he meant
Wasn’t he the one who threw you away?
You remember your stilted words and
How you looked away when he talked
Like you were looking at something else.
And he said, You were supposed to be mine.
You remember years later what your first mistake was
And when this man smiles at you
You smile back, and when he asks for your number
You write a number down without thinking
And you realize when he walked away it was
HIS number, you were just lost in the past.
You said, That was supposed to be mine.
You remember how you said nothing
Not when either of them walked away.
You said, One day it’ll be mine.
