Dying Soldier
Lying in a pool of flowing blood brings such peace
Each second that passes by brings another of those deceased
My hands hope to move for my smoking gun
But I know my pain is finally done
My eyes turn to lead
My breathing slows
Those who called me brother now lay beside me dead
They fall one and again and the death toll only grows
This war will overshadow who we are
We will be lost
Insignificant as another star
How many more deaths will this war cost?
I see friends that walked with me through younger years
Those who vowed that at their death they would not shed tears
The sounds of bombs and shouts of men and women fade
This war is just another mistake we made
As comrades run forward to fight
Cowards flee away from sight
Blood continues to feed the rocks and crows
Someday I wish this field of death would grow at least a single rose
I could have lived to see my wife
If I had chosen a different life
If only I could have changed the past
May my death be of the last
