Shadow,
Why can’t I be like you?
Watching and repeating
Everything they do;
Perfect imitator,
Unnoticed as you fade,
No different in the darkness
Than any other shade.

I’m alone in the light,
The cold brilliance of day,
Unable to hide
I can’t slip away.
Can I at least be ignored
If I can’t be respected?
I think to be hated
Is worse than neglected.

I envy the way
You exist without being,
The way they look through you
Without ever seeing.
I wish I were like you,
Wish they saw me the same
As a half-faded shadow
Silhouette with no name.

The author's comments:
This is about a person who wishes they were normal. They are different from everyone else and shunned for it. They wish they could just be ignored like a shadow, because it would be better than being hated. My inspiration was an assignment in English to write a poem addressing something that can't answer back.
