Fading

It began slowly
Like the dripping of black honey
Fading
Numbness setting in
Heart beats like sickening thumps
Breaths becoming sparse
Nothingness e a s i n g in
Fading
Swiftly now
Why have I been deserted in this hour?
Words said come back to haunt
Those left unuttered return to plague
Regrets like waves engulf me
Someone save me, I’ve learned my lesson,
My sandpaper tongue
through blue curtains of lips would
rasp if my throat was not shut
Forever shut
Fading
Oh that this were but a nightmare
I feel death running his bony hand o’er me
I relinquish my frail hold
A violent tug, then...
Darkness
Drumming
Light

A brief revelation of my last hours led me to write this poem. If I do not alter my life, I believe that the scene painted in this poem is my fate.
