For Love of a Dog

He loves her
It is as simple as that
And that is why
She dies
Because he cannot bear
To see the
Inevitable despair
That will glow
In her eyes
At the restraint
She has never felt
The confusion
That will stiffen
Her fur uneasily
Because she is
Prohibited from
Running, from
Hunting, from
Being herself
He loves her
It is as simple as that
And that is why
He stands
At her side
In the vet’s office
While the syringe
Empties of its poison
And her eyes
Full of life
Brown and bright
Empty of color
Fade into the blank
Stare of the dead
He loves her
And that is why
His hands caress
Her sides and
Sense the end
When her heart quits
And she flops forward
And there is no more
Excitement
Enthusiasm
Curious bliss
And there is no more
Her
He loves her
And that is why
He cries at a funeral
That does not take place
And no one attends
For the dog he killed
Out of love
