Letters to Lost Things
Dear Teddy bear,
(I think your name was Mr. Fluffy pants if I remember correctly).
But if I got the name wrong I won’t be offended if you correct me
I just wanted to say that I’m sorry for losing you at the park.
I’m sorry you had to fend for yourself under the swings in the dark
Thank you for holding my hand when no one else would
Thank you for lending me your furry ear when no one else could
Dear cell phone, I’m sorry for losing you at that sketchy dollar store down town
You’re probably in some random drug dealers hands right now
But thanks for staying up with me through the late night calls
I guess I have no choice but to hang up once and for all.
Dear math textbook, I wish I could say I’m sorry for losing you
But I’m pretty sure it was the best thing a girl could ever do
I’m mean honestly, no quadratic functions for a week?
Not saying I did it on purpose no, no, I would never
But I mean…you do the math: put two and two together.
Dear little brother, I’m sorry for losing you that one time at the store
Oh don’t look at me like that. There was a shirt on sale for $15.94!
Anyway the point is, I lose a lot of things.
H***, I’d probably lose my head if it weren’t attached to my shoulders
And you’d think it would get better the more I grow up and get older
But no, it just gets worse.
I’m sorry for losing you when I turned sixteen
I’m sorry that I only allow you to come alive in my dreams
It’s just too risky for me to love who I am
So I guess this is goodbye I hope you can understand
Dear innocence I’m sorry for leaving you behind
You have no idea how much I miss being blissfully blind,
Blind to the unstoppable velocity of endless animosity,
Infecting the minds that dare to stretch their curiosity
Dear Hope, I guess it’s only a matter of time
You see I’m already losing time and I think you’re next in line
