Please, Take Off Your Shoes and Stay for Awhile
To stand in the dark and face the world alone:
 It’s a hard thing
 If you want to be the one to show me the way, go ahead—Do it
 I can’t walk these streets by myself
 I need your love to be right beside me
 I need you to be holding my hand, leading
 Showing me the right way to go
 I want you to
 I want you to film me taking my first steps
 I want you to show me how to tie my shoes;
 I want you to help me onto my first pony ride
 I want you to be there right on my side when were making your birthday cake
 I want you to be there when I turn 16 and get my first car
 I want you to be there when I’m 18 and I graduate high school
 I want you to be there watching me get my diploma
 I want you to walk me down the isle, arms linked, side by side
 And once I reach the end, promise me—you’ll never let go
