I stand the silent sentry
Watching their lives

The working Man
Rushing to the office

The little Girl
Just learning to walk

The excited Tourists
Wasting time strolling along

The young Couple
Oblivious to all else

The shy Teenager
Trying to be cool

The expectant Mother
Waiting for her child

The blanket-wrapped Homeless
Holding out their hands

The gray-haired Lady
Wearing her Sunday best

The broke Musician
Playing just to eat

I have stood for a century
And will for one from now
I will watch as they go by,
My branches growing higher

This poem was inspired by a very old pine tree.
