New Beginnings
there was a time
when I was lost
in the past
in the future
something in between
which we call the present.
not much of a present
when you open it
and find sorrow.
I worked for years
to break the tears
to be strong
and proud.
I learned to smile again.
I beat the pain
I won the war.
now
I’ve opened my present
and the present
is now.
I can’t smile
the little things get me
the things I worked so hard
to break away from.
the tears
the fears
the pain
all rushing back.
I’m a little kid again
something I hoped I’d never be.
thanks to you.
thanks to you, I’ve got to start all over.
new beginnings aren’t all that.
they’re getting old.
and I don’t know if I can do it again.
