Earthquakes
When the ground shakes, the buildings shake.
And we shake, just for the land
as it settles itself.
Like settling down before a long sleep.
But,
as we sleep, we turn and tumble,
shifting to find that comfortable nook.
And the world? It is not stirred
by our insignificant movements.
As we adjust,
the earth sleeps quiet.
Able to ignore our small discomforts,
disconnected from the human experience.
We can not ignore what vibrates our bodies,
frightens our being
and tests our foundations.
To the earth that reminds us of perspective.
To the earthquakes that humbles us all.
