The Serving Tray
Concord grape juice with three ice cubes,
yogurt mixed with milk,
and a tall glass of water.
Arrange a plate of blueberries as well,
even though you know he wont eat any.
Bring out one of the nice trays,
Not the old, weaken, bamboo one,
the handles so thin, ready to break.
You fear carrying it by those thin handles,
so you balance the tray
on the palm of your hand.
Fold a clean cloth napkin,
he deserves the best,
and place a silver spoon a top it.
The tray is now set.
It is heavy in your hands,
his breakfast, lunch, and dinner,
as you ascend the stairs.
Careful not to spill,
and listen,
for the three melting ice cubes
clinking quietly against the glass,
to the rhythm of your carful steps.
