A Checklist for an Impromptu Meeting
If we met one day,
(you in the rain, you in the car, you in the middle of a grocery store – can you tell me where to find the peaches?)
If we met,
The first thing I’d do would be to run.
And the second, third, fourth things I’d do would be this:
Fall to my knees;
Apologize;
Thanks;
In that order, one after the other, no pause or space for breath
(your or mine or your brother’s or your father’s)
And then I’d get up,
Brush off my knees,
And introduce myself.
(hello, how are you?, turn left, aisle twelve next to the apples)
