My heart is burnt while the waves in my soul roll in,
faster and stronger as I watch you lose from the place on the rocks
that you took me to once.
We were young and restless, young and naive, young and in love.
You showed me the ocean with your eyes. You showed me the coral with your hands. You showed me the sand with your legs.
Life’s a beach, you told me. But before I could say anything
the ocean called for you
wanting your eyes, wanting your hands, wanting your legs. I tried to pull you out but the ocean wanted your body,
your soul.
I had your heart, you had mine.
And as I jumped in after you, you threw my heart into the ocean’s flames maybe to save me, maybe to save us.
But the scars have stayed invisible, though the burn has never been able to heal.
As the ocean swept you up
I stood watching from the place on the rocks that you took me to
once.
