A Better Cinderella

I look the mirror
One last time
Make sure everything perfect
Everything is
The dress, the shoes
My hair and make up.

I turn and start descending
Down the marble spiral staircase.
As I make the first turn
I can see his face
His expression is priceless
The one I was hoping for
Part stunned and wonder
Part happiness and love.
I step off the last step
And take his hand
A classical song starts to play
It’s one I’ve never heard
But it sounds so familiar.
We start to dance
The steps come easy
But I’ve never danced like this.

I look over his shoulder
As we dance and spin
I see familiar faces smiling but
I’ve never seen these people before.
A clock that is out of sight
Rings marking the hour
The other people are gone
The crystal chandelier is shaking
The whole room is shaking
A heavy wind starts blowing like a tornado
The walls and ceiling fall away
Disappearing into the swirling black.
He steps back and looks at me
His face is blank and confused
He says, “Wait, who are you?”
He doesn’t know me and
I realize I don’t know him either
Yet I love him as if
I’ve known him forever.
A black hole opens up under him
And sucks him away.
I cry out for him
Another black hole opens under me
And sucks me down into oblivion.
