In and upon the hall which I sat,
Contemplating as the hours grew late.
Darkness thickened, enveloping the hall
Piece by piece, as though a puzzle.
Rain pattered continuously against the windows,
Like an army sieging a fortress.
I watched carefully; the light that flickered shadows
That twisted and spun like the shapes and parts of a lifetime,
Always to be devoured by the blackness…
