“Nice Nikes,” the teacher says to him,
“I hope you enjoy shoes made by 4 year old girls in Thailand.”
I cringe.
They laugh.
“Relax Megan, it’s a joke” they say.
I nod and look away.
I cry during the Holocaust movie.
I cry for the lives that were destroyed.
“Anne frankly, Holocaust jokes aren’t funny,” one of them inserts.
My eyes burn.
“Megan, lighten up, were joking.” They say.
I cannot meet their eyes.
We travel to Washington D.C. , me and them
I am proud of the marchers, waving their rainbow flags,
Holding hands openly.
“Faggots don’t have feelings.” One of them sneers.
They laugh.
I turn.
I meet his eyes,
“Megan, it’s just a –“
My hand slaps the words out of his mouth
They tumble to the ground and shatter on the concrete.
“Crazy b****.” He screams.
Maybe I am crazy.
The only one who can empathize.
The one who carries the pain of the world.
They laugh at his joke.
