I Do Not Want This To Fail

Though you’ve captured me in this plastic cup,
with not even a hole big enough for me to crawl out of,
I like this.
Though you’ve lied by telling me that life would be
easier here with you instead of out there alone,
I’m attracted—like a moth to the luminescence.
But I am just a caterpillar, and you stuck me in your trap
before I could morph into that
independent butterfly.
I’ve grown to know you,
though you only look at me and touch me
as if I’m not a living thing, but just a toy.
I feel.
I could hold my breath, you know,
die right here and free myself from your torturous hold.
But I won’t.
For you are all I have now and how else can
a caterpillar express her love for the boy
who has made her life pleasantly miserable?
I know my life will never be the same,
but now we can grow together.
Though it hurts, I dismiss the pain.
No, I will hold no grudge.
I do not want this to fail.
