At age 5,
A vision has
Made its way
Through someone’s eyes.
Blueprints
Are being made,
People
Are buying bits and pieces,
And a previous idea
Is being thrown out
Of the wagon.

At age 15,
Everything is being
Put together.
The item
Has been built,
Test drives
Are being run,
And you’re putting down
Your visor as you
Prepare for the world.

At age 25,
You’re just
Starting out.
The engine has
Been initiated,
The radio is going
Full blast,
And everyone is
Strapped in;
Ready for a ride.

At age 35,
All the wheels
Are turning.
You go through
The green,
You stop at
The red,
And you turn
As you need to
Change your course.

At age 45,
You tend to switch
The gear to reverse.
Looking back
To the time you were made,
Wishing you had turned
Once you came to another path,
And having to stop
In repair;
Once in a blue moon.

At age 55,
Life’s lessons
Really come through.
Why seat belts
Are worn;
They keep you in tight.
Why there’s a gas
And a brake;
To stop or go
In any situation.
Why there’s more
Than one seat;
So you can count
On others in
Times of need.

At age 65,
The side view mirrors
Have fallen off.
The chairs
Are squeaking,
The bumper
Is half-on half-off,
And the gear has
Been changed
To neutral;
You know there is
no turning back.

At age 75,
The battery is beginning
To wear out.
The brakes
Are barely working,
The tires
Are losing traction,
And the repair shop
Is making a permanent spot
For all of your visits.

At age 85,
The engine has
Completely broken down.
The repair shop
Went out of business,
The tires hit a nail
And popped,
And the radio
Has shut down.
But you are all
The wiser.

Favorite Quote:
Love is anterior to life, posterior to death, initial of creation, and the exponent of breath.
-Emily Dickinson

I like that you compared life to a brand new car that went through the motions and the years, broke down, but served you well.
