The Things You Hear

Three small words that are known by the world.
They are thrown around,
towels blowing on a clothesline,
flame dancing in the darkest night.
Three words spoken into a moment of silence.
An anxious plea for the husband to stay,
a casual excuse for an insulting phrase,
words uttered from the lips of a small child
as they cling tightly to their mother’s leg.
They are written in middle-school notebooks,
followed by the initials of the boy with the sparkling smile.
And after eons of sin, stated by a deity
with unfailing faith in the world.
