It seemed like yesterday when I heard your laugh bubbling up and floating free through the air
It seemed like yesterday that I saw the light in your smile
It seemed like yesterday when I had my hands in yours
It seemed like yesterday that fingers were the subjects of conversation
warm hands, happy hands, hands with rings

It seemed like yesterday when the voice coated in fake womanly concerned told me
to leave message
It seemed like yesterday when I didn’t know what to say

It seemed like yesterday when I stood in silence every time
It seemed like yesterday that I stopped clearing your place at the dinner table
the roses decaying on its chest
It seemed like yesterday your pillow snuggled next to mine
It seemed like yesterday we battled over the bathroom
I can still hear the clacking of toothbrush sword battles
and the echoes of our shouts in the shower

It seemed like yesterday when it started again
Movie credits playing in reverse
you were a star

It seemed like yesterday it was hard to remember
the fact that we shared so intimately the same moon
It seemed like yesterday when I waited for the sun to set
not to catch fireflies, but to start fires

It seemed like yesterday when I had arms around me
It seemed like yesterday when I told them to put their cigarettes through ripped stockings
It seemed like yesterday when I inhaled clouds of white
I wanted to taste the silver lining
Would it be as sweet as your tongue?
It seemed like yesterday when I gave little kids shots to get rid of their boo boos
I listened to them cry in pain
It seemed like yesterday when I wanted for my own
It seemed like yesterday when I sat down in a café with no coffee
It seemed like yesterday I would remember your last name
the one that was supposed to be our last name
It seemed like yesterday when I could barely see through the windows
It seemed like yesterday when you would tell me going to a bar that only served broad ban was silly
though it was only because we had our own
It seemed like yesterday that I would search your name every night
a written mantra

It seemed like yesterday when I thought I knew everything
It seemed like yesterday you proved me wrong
It seemed like yesterday you left me
you took all the answers
gave me the dust from your wake,
all my questions

It seemed like yesterday I thought tomorrow would come
It seemed like yesterday I’d thought you’d come
It seemed like yesterday that neither did
