Bang.
In this darkness I am not alone;
Most often humans dread the phenomenon
Of loneliness, but not tonight.
I long for it.
Someone is here.
Although he tries to be sly, I hear the floorboards creak as he hounds for me.
Revenge is the ultimate enemy.
My chest pulses faster and faster, breathing out of sync;
Inexplicable trepidation.
The ominous figure finally turns the corner
And our eyes meet,
Once again.
I cannot speak, I cannot think—the world stops.
“I am dead” my conscience speaks.
The enemy speaks next; “this is payback.”
Bang, his weapon sings.
The voice ringing, echoing,
Until I wither away.
I bolt up so rapidly from this unfathomable nightmare.
The trickle of cold sweat that streams down my spine
Is as icy as my heart.
“I am alive” I think to myself.
For now I lie awake in darkness, replaying my life
Flashing before my eyes.
Knowing he will haunt my dreams
Again and again.
