It was night.
Three in the morning, I think.
With hot summer air, rushing through
The car window. And she smoked a cigarette
The tip sizzling hot, yellow and orange as she climbed up the stairs; opened the door.
With smoke billowing out of her mouth, she exhaled,
And waited, her head resting on beaten leather;
Her eyelids fluttering shut,
While Him and I twisted in stained bed sheets, and thick blankets
Touching, tasting unfamiliar skin
Coated in rainbow salt sweat.
A promise of a new promise,
And a new beginning.
Where there was no heartbreak. No backstreet playmates with their lipstick
Signatures on your shirt collar.
No vampire lovers with hidden secrets and lips that so easily
Spread lies. No heartbreak.
A deal.
A bargain. For friends desperate for someone
Who could be more than a friend. No secrets;
No lies; no need. We were invincible.
We were infinite.
