Freedom
What is this freedom,
you say that we behold?
the life of some,
Who were never sold.
The 13 amendment was ratified
made to set us free.
But there were some who were not satisfied,
who made it just like slavery.
We had no land to call our own,
and not a place to live.
This is where we have grown,
but yet, they have nothing to give.
The white thought we weren’t the same,
that we didn’t deserve our civil rights.
They were to blame
for all of the black code fights.
They tried not to let us vote,
we had to pay to get in.
So we tried to devote
all our votes to the republican.
As you know, our opinions did not matter.
They wouldn’t listen to what we said,
and they made all our dreams shatter,
then boosting theirs ahead.
If we wanted to earn,
what little we could,
we would return
to farming-as they said we should.
The redeemers started segregation,
separating blacks and whites.
This practice spread across the nation,
and yet even further restricted our rights.
I dream about a world,
where everyone is free,
and where blacks and whites are together swirled.
This is something I hope to see.
