To think is easy. To act is difficult. To act as one thinks is the most difficult. -Goethe

A sidewalk runs the length of Time

To the ends of the universe,
The cobbled concrete slabs meander
Held together with duct tape and love

Along it walks the ones that time forgot,
Those who once were but are no more

They trudge steadily along the unyielding cement
Through a vortex called Life

And for them, on both sides of the sidewalk,
A handrail, to guide.

They walk and walk,
No stopping for the tireless
No breathing for the breathless
No…

CRACK!!

All is silent,
The sound is deafening,
Yet noise is non-existent

Down the middle of the crowded highway
There runs an interstice.

A fissure through which slowly drips,
Drops that float up, to the infinite

And in the drops, there is the tangy, sweet orange scent of a Clementine
And the poignant sounds of an eloquent speaker whose words resound through Time:

“I have a dream”

Then, without warning,
You stand still to listen
Unsure of why, but confident in your decision

The rest plow on past you as your ears strain to catch the sound of silence

There it is!
The sounds of the squeaking wheels,
The smell of stale fries, of millions of people
The hydraulic hiss of the door,
And the electronic sound of the voiceover

“Next Stop, Time Square”

And you know, if you open your eyes
You’re back on the subway,
Headed towards your destination
Whatever it may be.
