Autumn Winds

Autumn winds rustle the alpine trees
harmonizing a gentle morning melody
as you stretch out of bed
Rays of the sun’s brilliant smile penetrate
Through atmosphere, through clouds,
through the white wooden blinds
dangling from the crippled cracked window

to say, why yes, this inevitable instant
of love unshed,
to make up for hopeless time unspent

the beatitude of a new blameless day
so tarnished and accused when the moon
just awakens
under it you lay,
count the stars of mistakes

Shameful are the steps taken
for granted
to take each unyielding flash of life
and expect another

Last breaths being taken
the guilty realization
in the darkness of the
new frigid night

Watch the smoke dissipate
from your lips, evaporates as you whisper,
“Thank you and goodnight.”
