Poem from the Trenches

October 10, 2011
As I walk along the inside of the trenches,
I see the clouds of smoke and fire, my best friend on the ground beneath my feet,
I taste the bitterness of the lingering poison gas,
I hear the deafening artillery fire and the pounding of soldiers' feet scrambling to take cover,
I smell the chloride of lime, rotting corpses, and the bitter taste of defeat,
As I kneel down, I feel the dead ice-cold skin of my brother Jonathan,
I feel discouraged and angry,
I feel not the sting of regret, but the need for revenge,
I will get revenge,
I will return home but I am not the same man....not anymore
