"A poem is never finished, only abandoned."
~Paul Valery

I am a believer, a confider in the truth
I am a believer of myths, of heroes, that evil can win but good will always prevail
I am a believer of freedom and rights
But most importantly, I am a believer of stars

I have always believed the stars are souls
Souls of the dead, of who were and will never be again
The ancestors of old
Our fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, cousins, friends, lovers, companions
Our actions and us they watch

So many have died and gone to their second lives as stars
So many to look after us
So many gone

When my grandfather became a star and joined the many in the speckled heavens
I cried
It was the first time I knew the name of a star
A name of one of the many

When my grandfather was alive he was of the kindest soul
Slow to anger, quick to laugh -
A laugh that rolled over the highest valleys and swam through the deepest seas -
He had an appetite of a hundred young men, never fully satisfied -
Much like his want for knowledge -
But knowledge is not needed when all his wisdom came with age
My love for him was infinite, is infinite

My grandfather was an electrician
He brought light to homes and families
Now he brings light to the darken skies, the blackest unknown

As I look at the night skies
As I gaze upon the oldest beings
As I watch the infinite domain
As I stare upon my deceased grandfather
I feel safe

The stars are everywhere
Over everyone
And even if you can't see the stars during the day
It does not mean they are not there
The stars are everywhere
With everyone
I am never alone

As he shone in his life
It is only fitting that he would be the brightest star
Giving off the light of his life
The brighter in life, the brighter in death

I wish to be like my grandfather
I wish to have a light to shine through the dark abyss
I wish, I wish to live

I want to be like my grandfather
I want to be a source of unlimited light to a black world
I want, I want to live

But wanting is wasted on the young
And wishing is exhausted on the old
I am neither young nor old
I should neither wish nor want

I am not a remarkable person
I am not a memorable visage
I do not turn heads on the street
I do not loudly boast my existence
I am simply another face in a sea of people

I do not want or wish for fame gained by the goodness of my acts
I want no nation, state, city, town, community to give me recognition for my deeds
But I want to do those deeds
So how can I?

I can bring my light to people –
Not everyone – like the stars –
I can shine my light at a personal, individual, singular basis

I want no fame
I do not want my star to implode with greed and become a black hole
I do not want my star to explode with egotism and hurt other stars in the process
I do want my star to never fade or die out
I want to give pure harmless light, guiding light, helping light, sharing light

The stars are everywhere
Over everyone
And even if you can't see the stars during the day
It does not mean they are not there
The stars are everywhere
With everyone
I am never alone

I want to be wished upon, to fulfill someone's dream
People will read me, decipher me
Search for hidden secrets
Secrets of the past, mysteries of the future

I want to offer guidance, to lighten the path of the lost
I will, with my fellow souls, create pictures
Shapes with stories, stories of heroes

My light will fill the gloomy heavens
Shining so bright that I will be identifiable among the many
The greatness of my actions in life will reflect upon my death
My deeds told in the stories and shown in the shapes of the stars
The brighter in life, the brighter in death

And you?
How bright will your star be?
Becoming a star is inevitable
Take the unavoidable and use it to your advantage
Have your unique brilliance shine
Make something of your life, as I am

My grandfather watches over me
He shines upon my brow and glimmers on my activities
As his did, my legacy will pass to my children and my children's children
All will, in time, become stars and join my grandfather and me
They will become one of the many
One of the many watching over our actions and us
They will become believers of stars
One of the many

The stars are everywhere
Over everyone
And even if you can't see the stars during the day
It does not mean they are not there
The stars are everywhere
With everyone
You are never alone

The author's comments:
For English class we were given the assignment of writing a three page poem about ourselves. The poem needed to be similar to Walt Whitman's "Song of Myself" by using different literary techniques including lists, metaphors, similes, parallelism, repetition, ect...

This is the poem I wrote. I firmly believe in the beliefs stated in this poem. I love gazing upon the stars on clear nights and making up stories about the souls of each star.
