To be a bird on a summer’s morn,
Waking up to the sun,
Alive and warm.
To hear the chick’s feeble cry,
“I’m off to find food!”
And I take to the sky.

To be a bird on a summer’s day,
Not a care in the world,
Simply chirping away.
To shake with fright as the black bird crows,
Or to be the one scaring if another comes too close.

To be a bird on a summer’s eve,
To feel myself rise on a gentle breeze.
Relaxing alone on a sturdy branch,
Or to fly back home,
And make it by chance.

The life of a bird on a summer’s day?
None but they can explain or say.

The author's comments:
I wrote this a while ago. I was outside on my porch and I saw a bird sitting on a branch on a tree in my front yard. It was beautiful. It looked so serene. I wondered what it was doing there. And then my mind wandered and thus my poem was born.
