"If you live to be 100, I hope I live to 100 minus 1 day, so I never have to live without you." -Winnie the Pooh

The trail of tears
flowing over our home
covering the ground
washing the years away
flooding out the soil.

Hearts broken
our people torn apart
pain tearing at the ground.

We are no longer living
since we are
away from the place of our birth;
our home.
We are merely surviving
on the tendrils of memories
that start to fade
soaring high in the sky
away from when we were free.

Violated by the white man
governed by laws that are not ours
corralled by the plod of a stranger’s boots.

In the waving grass
the last traces of our people
flow away in the wind
losing everything.

In school we studied the Trail of Tears, which was the mass relocation of Native American people during the 1830s. It moved me because these people were forced out of their homes for the benefit of others and were made to walk many, many miles away from all that they knew and loved.
