Silence

I’ll tell you now, not to go out
After the clock strikes twelve-
For something stalks about.

Silence walks, barefoot, through the town;
It comes in skeletal form
Creating shadows that drown.

As its spell casts a haunting luster
Over the streets,
To no master does it answer.

At this deadly hour,
Its quietude begins in a slanderous tongue-
The night it does devour,

With eyes of pallid stones,
I’ve seen, on the coldest of nights
Silence flashing its pearly whites.

The author's comments:
Have you ever walked along a street at midnight? When silence is most potent in the air, and feelings of: emptiness, despair, wonder, and eeriness collide inside you. There is something so pure and raw about such an experience, it's as if one can hear silence. And that truly is remarkable, to hear something that is not sound.
