What do they want?

They told me to shoot for the stars.
They told me I can’t do it all.
They told me to live in the moment.
They told me to always think of the future.
They told me to hope for the best.
They told me to expect the worse.
Then they told me “just to listen to your heart,”
But the only thing I could hear was a drum
Beating.
Waiting.
Confused about it all.

As a student in high school who is trying to enjoy these years and get ready for college at the same time, I'm slowly beginning to realize that life can't always be what you want it to be.
