I find you in the church
Where we soon become fast friends
I hold on to your pinkie
While you keep grabbing for my hand
Though i would not let you
I could not stand hurting again

You were like a mother to me
You looked like a mother
You talked like a mother
When it was time to leave
We said our goodbyes
I waited happily to our next Sunday

When Sunday came,
You weren't in your seat
I should have figured people wonder
Why i don't hold their hand
My fear of getting that close
Seems to stop me every time

What made this any different
People in my life always leave
They always make empty promises
I always dismiss them
To the bottom of a dark ditch in The back of my mind, it's crowded

But you were like a mother to me
You looked like a mother
You talked like a mother
But sooner or later the all leave
And i have yet to find one to stay
But you were like a mother to me
